Citizenship sought for Lankans

2013 Dec 17

Spiritual leader and founder of the Art of Living Foundation Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has urged the Tamil Nadu and Indian governments to either accord Indian citizenship to the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees lodged in various refugee camps or facilitate their repatriation to their home land.

Talking to reporters in Ramanathapuram, the spiritual leader said it was a pity that the Sri Lankan Tamils were treated as second class citizens and leading a miserable life in the refugee camps in the State, The Hindu newspaper reported.

Ravi Shankar, who visited the Mandpam refugee camp, said many of the refugees wished to return to their homeland and urged the governments to facilitate this.

When these people get citizenships in the US, Norway and other countries, they remained refugees in Tamil Nadu, he lamented.

He said the Art of Living Foundation, which had collected 10 lakh signatures seeking their repatriation or according citizenship to those who wished to live here, would soon meet the President and submit a memorandum, pressing the demands.
