Petition against Indo-Lanka ties

2013 Dec 12

The Madras High Court Bench has reserved its judgment on a public interest litigation petition filed by an advocate seeking a direction to the Union government to terminate all bilateral defence agreements between India and Sri Lanka.

The petitioner, V. Ramesh, submitted that the Central government had adopted an “insensitive policy of defence cooperation with Sri Lanka” by offering to train Sri Lankan naval officials in India, the Hindu newspaper reported.

“It is of great dismay that India has offered to train the Sri Lankan Naval officials here. The Prime Minister should review the insensitive policy of defence cooperation with Sri Lanka, which is in utter disregard to the sentiments of the Tamils,” he contended in his petition.

According to the petitioner, he had submitted a representation to the Cabinet and Defence Secretaries of the Union of India on November 30, 2013, to extradite from India all Sri Lankan nationals undergoing defence training. He moved the court because his representation was not considered.

The case came up for hearing before a Division Bench comprising Justices R. Sudhakar and S. Vaidyanathan. The judges reserved their judgment.
