HRCSL says will do its job

2013 Dec 10

As the world celebrates International Human Rights Day today, the Human Rights Commission in Sri Lanka (HRCSL) reaffirmed its commitment to protect and promote Human Rights in Sri Lanka.

“It is an obligation of every government to guarantee rights of all citizens,” HRCSL said in a statement today.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 10 December as the Human Rights Day in 1950, to bring to the attention of the peoples of the world the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the first global enunciation of Human Rights, which was adopted on 10th December 1948 as the common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.

The declaration consists of a preamble and 30 articles, setting out a broad range of fundamental Human Rights and freedoms to which all men and women anywhere in the world are entitled without any distinction.  The Declaration has served as the foundation for an expanding system of human rights protection that today focuses also on vulnerable groups such as differently abled persons, migrant workers and internally displaced persons.

“Join hands to work towards a more peaceful world on Human Rights Day,” HRCSL said. (Colombo Gazette)
