Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission Act to be amended to suit current trends

2013 Dec 10

The Sri Lankan government is considering to amend the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission Act of 1996 in order to suit the current trends and to further secure the human rights of the people.

Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa has told the media that the Commission has already presented five amendments to the existing legislation to the Justice Minister and the President.

The Commission intends to further strengthen the human rights of the people through these amendments.

He explained that while the Commission could only make recommendations under the current legislation, the proposed amendments would enable the HRCSL to directly intervene in human rights issues.

According to the new amendments, the Commission would be able to issue interim orders during investigations and conduct national level inquiries.

Dr. Mahanamahewa noted that the proposed amendments will give more teeth to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka and it would help address various allegations of human rights violations leveled against the country.

The government is looking at addressing these amendments before the next UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva next March.
