Undergraduates of the Sri Jayewardenepura University staged a Satyagraha opposite the institution’s main entrance yesterday over several demands.

Spokesman for the Students’ Council, M. K. R. Rajapaksha told The Island that they had earlier planned to hold a protest march from the university to Wijerama Junction, but it had been cancelled.

He said they had held the protest march within the university premises and ended it with a half an hour Satyagraha at the main entrance.

"Our main demand is the withdrawal of the arbitrary suspension of 88 undergraduates," Rajapaksha said.

He said the university authorities had, so far, this year suspended 88 undergraduates, sacked seven and suspended the degrees of two.

Besides, the university administration had filed court cases against 110 students and 28 students had been arrested, Rajapaksha said, adding that university security division had assaulted two students and threatened two others.

"The university administration has cancelled the Mahapola scholarships of 18 students so far for protesting against harassment," he said.

Rajapaksha said that they would stage a Satyagraha at the University Grants Commission or even near Temple Trees if their demands were not met.

Vice Chancellor Dr. N. L. A. Karunaratne was not available for comment.
