District court issues order preventing health trade unions strike

2013 Nov 28

The Colombo district court has issued an order preventing the forty-eight-hour strike action by sixteen health trade unions. Medical practitioners attached to 16 trade unions that come under the Joint Council of Nursing, Professions Supplementary to Medicine and Paramedics services began 48 hour strike at 7 a.m. on today.

Convener of the Joint Council of Nursing, Professions Supplementary to Medicine and Paramedics services, Saman Rathnapriya noted that the strike action will be carried out, in over 600 hospitals.

He added that the strike action is being held against salary discrepancies and professional cutbacks.

He further said,

“No task that comes under Professions Supplementary to Medicine are being carried out today. Thereby, all laboratories are closed today, drugs will not be issued, X-rays or scans will not be performed, ECGs will not be operated”

Many patients were severely inconvenienced due to the strike action.

However,  Director of the National Hospital in Colombo, Dr. Anil Jayasinghe noted that steps have been taken to overcome the difficulties caused due to the strike action.. Newsfirst inquired about the matter from the Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka.

“There is absolutely no reason for a strike action,” he said. He further stated that if those on strike wished to fulfill certain demands, they will have to do it through discussions as by engaging in strike actions they have been putting innocent lives in danger.
