Govt. mulls enhancing duty free allowance of Lankan migrant workers

2013 Nov 26

Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera told Parliament yesterday that action would be taken to increase the duty-free concession granted to the Lankan migrant workers returning home from either by US$ 1,000 or 2,000.

Responding to a query raised by UNP Matara District MP, the Minister said that currently the migrant workers are entitled for a duty free concession of US $ 5000.

The minister said that a facility of importing a motor vehicle under duty concessions once they have deposited a sum of US$ 20,000 from their earnings in a Sri Lankan bank has been suspended.

The facility has been suspended under the reduction of the Green Permit system that allowed a Sri Lankan employed in a foreign country to gift his blood relatives or spouse and children living in Sri Lanka a vehicle used for 10 years to two years, the minister said. (SI)
