Channel 4 greeted by demo (Audio)

2013 Nov 12

A protest was staged at the exit door of the Katunayake airport when a group of Channel 4 journalists arrived in Sri Lanka to cover the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Demonstrators carrying placards and posters objected to the presence of the Channel 4 team saying they had discredited Sri Lanka and failed to highlight the atrocities committed by the LTTE.

H. K. D. Chandrasoma of the Alliance to Foster National Unity, which organised the protest, said that they also wanted to voice their anger towards the government for approving visas to the Channel 4 media team.

Channel 4 journalist Jonathan Miller tweeted saying that Channel 4 journalist and Director of the contravercial film ‘No Fire Zone’ Callum Macrae was also mobbed by the Sri Lankan media at the airport accusing him of being anti Sri Lanka.

Over the weekend Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella had said that despite India refusing to grant Macrae a visa to attend the premier of a Sri Lanka war crimes video, the Sri Lankan government had no issues on granting him the visa despite having reservations about him.

“Our stand on him has not changed but we hope by coming to Sri Lanka he will see the real picture and have a change of opinion,” the Minister had said. (Colombo Gazette)
