MDMK detains train in Madurai protesting against CHOGM

2013 Nov 12

Vehemently opposing the Centre's decision to participate in the 23rd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting to be held in Colombo on Friday, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) activists led by its general secretary Vaiko detained the Madurai-Chennai Egmore Vaigai Express and staged a demonstration here on Tuesday.

As a result of the agitation, the superfast Express was detained for about 30 minutes. The train, which was scheduled to leave Madurai at 6.50 a.m., left at 7.20 a.m., police said.

Leading the protest, Mr. Vaiko, raised slogans against Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

In the same vein, he blamed the UPA-led Congress, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and AICC president Sonia Gandhi, for neglecting the pleas of “millions of Tamils” to boycott CHOGM.

The MDMK leader demanded that India stay away from the conclave, which alone, he said, would restore the lost respect for India among the world community. At a time when the island country is accused of war crimes, it has no right to convene the CHOGM, Mr. Vaiko alleged and appealed to all Tamils to voice their support for the boycott call.

The party cadre also took a dig at the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for detaining Kolathur Mani, a Tamil outfit leader, under NSA, for voicing his support for Sri Lankan Tamils. (Hindu)
