Hunger strike against land grab

2013 Nov 12

A hunger strike was launched by some residents in Vallikamam North today against the alleged forceful occupation of their land by the military.

Northern Provincial Council member M.K. Sivajilingham said that the demonstration which began this morning will continue over the next few days.

He said that the issue will also be raised with foreign delegates who are in the country to attend the Commonwealth summit and who are expected to visit Jaffna.

Sivajilingham said that the demonstrators will push for the land grab to be suspended failing which further action will be taken.

Over 2000 families have already filed court cases over the land being taken over by the army and while the cases are still before court the army had recently begun demolishing homes on the land.

Several owners of homes located in over 6000 acres of land in Valikamam North remain displaced even after the war.

The army however insists land taken over for security purposes in the North was acquired legally and not by force. (Colombo Gazette)
