Unsuitable people in the education sector ruining Sri Lanka's free education - academics

2013 Nov 12

University teachers in Sri Lanka say that the country's free education sector is facing destruction due to the appointment of unsuitable persons in charge of education.

Head of the Federation of University Teachers' Association (FUTA), Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri said that persons with a vision and the ability to uplift the country's education sector have to be appointed to lead the sector.

"Otherwise, the country's education sector will be faced with the same crisis as the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB). Despite the fact that the SLTB is the state transport service, the government is moving out of the transport sector resulting in the Board facing a crisis," the FUTA head has explained.

Dr. Devasiri has said that the current situation has placed the free education sector in grave danger and immediate action needed to be taken to address it.
