EPDP rejects armed group tag

2013 Nov 07

The EPDP today rejected allegations that it was responsible for several murders and violent acts targeting Tamil politicians.

EPD leader Douglas Devananda, speaking in parliament today, said that the allegations are part of an agenda carried out by his political opponents.

“All these are politically motivated fabricated allegations leveled by my political opponents in order to tarnish me and my party’s image as well as to tarnish the image of the Government I am aligned to. With all the character assassination I always stood firm with the party in power for the wellbeing of my community and my country,” he said.

He also said that the EPDP had nothing to do with some of the incidents reported in the North during the Northern Provincial Council Elections.

“Assassinate me if you wish but don’t assassinate my character,” the Minister said quoting a comment once made by former President the late Ranasinghe Premadasa.

He also rejected reports that the EPDP had attempted to assassinate former President Chandrika Kumaratunga in 1994.

The EPDP leader also said that although his party welcomes the recommendations in the LLRC report, the EPDP feels the allegations against the EPDP in the report are done with ulterior motives. (Colombo Gazette)
