Gota says shanties must go

2013 Nov 07

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Gotabaya Rajapaksa says at a time when the city of Colombo is developing rapidly it is imperative to replace shanties and slums with sky high housing schemes.

The Ministry of Defence quoted him as saying this after he announced that the newly constructed ‘Mihidhu Senpura’ 500 housing scheme situated in Dematagoda is ready to be handed over to the public this month.

He stressed that there was some disinformation and misinformation conveyed regarding the locating of the underserved settlements.

“We have built these schemes in the vicinity to their original places of living so there will not be a drastic change in their habitats” he noted.

He also reiterated that under the project the environment has also been developed and the people will be shifted to a better environment which would be beneficial to the future generations as well.

Meanwhile the Chairperson of the Urban Development Authority Nimal Perera said that measures would be taken to eliminate the slums culture in Colombo. (Colombo Gazette)
