Sri Lanka Tamil Minister asks President to conduct an independent inquiry on Channel 4 video

2013 Nov 05

Sri Lanka government Minister and Leader of the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) Douglas Devananda has written to President Mahinda Rajapaksa requesting an independent inquiry on the latest video documentary released by the Britain's Channel 4 television.

Minister Devananda has asked the President conduct an independent inquiry in to the claim made by the Channel 4 documentary that Isaipriya, an LTTE media woman was killed by the Sri Lanka troops after she was captured and not during the final battle.

Sri Lanka Army says Isaipriya, alias Shoba, was a "Lieutenant Colonel" of the LTTE and actually killed alongside with other LTTE cadres in the final battle with the Sri Lankan Army on May 18, 2009.

In his letter the Minister, on behalf of all Tamil people, has asked the President to take appropriate action soon and reveal the truth regarding the circumstances of her death to the public.

He said the video released just ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting has stirred emotions of both the local Tamil people who woke up to the end of the war and the overseas Tamils.

Devananda asked the President to conduct an independent investigation to identify the culprits and bring them to meet justice in a court, an EPDP statement said.

He said investigating the video and ensuring justice will be the best way to address concerns regarding the final stages of the war.

Channel 4 on Friday telecast the video footage showing Isaipriya being captured alive and taken away by army troops, with hands tied behind her back. The video claimed that Isaipriya was raped and executed after being captured by the troops and not during the final battle as claimed by the government.

Military spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya dismissed the video as a "fake" and said that it is nothing new for Channel 4 to discredit Sri Lanka at important times such as the UN Human Rights Council sessions and the upcoming Commonwealth summit.
