More powers to Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission

Sri Lanka's Human Rights Commission (HRCSL) will be given more powers to take stern actions against the human rights violators, the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Priyantha R. P. Perera said.

According to Justice Perera, under the new laws anyone failing to implement the Commission's recommendations within two weeks of the decision will face legal action.

The usual procedures is when a complaint alleging violation of human rights is lodged the Commission, following an inquiry will issue a set of recommendations to the accused parties and the y have a two week time frame to implement the recommendations.

However, the Commission did not have the power to take legal action if the parties failed to implement Commission's recommendations.

The Justice has said that even the government officials ignore the Commission's orders.

However, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa had given approval to amend the Human Rights Commission Act to enable the Commission to take stern actions against violators, the Chairman has said.
