Sri Lanka's Human Rights Commission to educate politicians

2013 Oct 10

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) plans to educate politicians on human rights and related issues.

Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa has said the decision to conduct an educational programme was made following a proposal by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay during her visit to Sri Lanka.

He said the Commission is looking at holding a series of seminars on human rights.

The first in the series of seminars will be held for the newly elected members of the Northern Provincial Council.

According to Dr. Mahanamahewa, similar programs have already been carried out for officials of the police department and other civil servants in the provinces.

The Commonwealth Secretariat is working with Sri Lanka's Human Rights Commission to determine a roadmap for the Commission's role in national reconciliation efforts.

The Commonwealth Secretariat last month facilitated a roundtable in Vavuniya in the North to bring together the Chairperson, commissioners and senior staff of the Commission, civil society organizations from the North, and religious leaders who are actively engaged in promoting reconciliation and addressing post-conflict issues in Vavuniya and surrounding areas in the North.
