Those who called in Army to Weliweriya revealed

2013 Oct 10

It was the IGP who has called on the military to aid the police in dealing with the protest which was held in Weliweriya town over the Rathupaswala drinking water issue, Gampaha division in charge SP Vijitha D.Comasaru said.

He made this remark when the case was taken into hearing today (09) before the Gampaha Chief Magistrate Mr. Tikiri K. Jayathilake.

The evidences were directed by the Chief Inspector of the CCD - Neville De Silva, and the Gampaha police SP said that it was not him who called in the Army to disperse the protesters.

Gampaha Chief Magistrate Mr. Tikiri K. Jayathilake stated that the Gampaha SP's statement clearly proves that in the Rathupaswala incident the intelligence units have failed to inform the senior officers about the intention of the public gatherings in order to take adequate action on time.

Magistrate further ordered the CCD director to draw the attention of the IGP regarding this issue.

When asked by the Magistrate about the number of Police officers who had been deployed during the Rathupaswala protest, SP Comasaru replied by saying that there were around 1000 Police officers deployed at the scene.

Expressing his views, Counsel Upul Deshapriya said that the Police had taken more care in ensuring thesafety of the controversial factory rather than taking action to solve the problem of the public.
