Court summons a defense ministry secretary

2013 Oct 10

Homagama Court today ordered P.M.Ranjith, the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Defense to appear before Court to present facts regarding the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda.

The Court made this order regarding the petition filed by the journalist's wife Sandhya Eknaligoda pleading for a writ of Habeas Corpus.

Responding to a question raised by the United National Party (UNP) MP Ajith P.Perera formerly at the Parliament, the Additional Defense Secretary for Parliamentary affairs had stated that they had received information that an armed group had abducted Prageeth Eknaligoda.

Upon that statement, the petitioner's Counsels requested the Court to summon the Additional Secretary to the Court to cross examine his statement.

Accepting the request, the Judge ordered him to appear before Court on Nov. 13th.

Mr. Prageeth Eknaligoda has been missing since January 2010.

Govt MP Arundika Fernando recently made a statement that he was introduced to Prageeth Eknaligoda when he was in France, by journalist Manjula Wediwardana.

However, when the BBC Sandeshaya queried by Mr. Wediwardana, he had denied of any meeting with MP Arundika Fernando at all.

Current Chief Justice Mohan Peiris, when he was holding the office of Legal Adviser to the Cabinet, stated before the UN in Geneva that they had received information that Mr. Eknaligoda is living in a foreign country under political asylum.

But, when summoned to court in order to inquire from Mr. Peiris with regard to this information, his answer was that it is only the "God almighty" who knows where Eknaligoda is.
