In response to a proposal made by UN Human Rights Commissioner, Navanethem Pillay, during her recent visit to the country, the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) is preparing to hold a series of seminars to educate politicians concerning human rights, said Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa.

“A workshop on this subject was held in December 2012 for the ministers and parliamentarians of both the government and opposition parties, with the participation of 65 politicians in total and the latest programme is an extension of it. It is also recommended by the LLRC,” he said.

Speaking further, the Chairman said the SRCSL is planning to hold the first seminar in the series for the Northern Provincial Council members as they are new entrants to provincial administration.

The officials in secretariats, police department and other civil servants in the provinces have been given lessons in human rights to date, which were very successful, he said. “The workshops will be useful to them in carrying out their duties. We will have to expect adverse reactions from certain international powers at 2014 Geneva UN Conference. We have to be prepared to face them,” he added. (Ceylon Today Online)
