Trade unions in Sri Lanka to commence campaign to win demands at the government's next budget

2013 Oct 01

Trade unions in Sri Lanka are now gearing to commence a campaign to win demands for working people at the government's next budget.

The Coordinating Committee for a Joint Trade Union Alliance says it will commence a campaign to win the 21 demands it has presented to the Finance Ministry to be included in next year's budget.

Member of the coordinating committee, Wasantha Samarasinghe said the trade unions through its campaign would put pressure on the government to implement the proposals presented to the Finance Ministry.

He observed that the coordinating committee would hold a leaflet distribution campaign as the first step towards creating awareness among the public and the working masses about the 21 demands.

The leaflet distribution campaign is to be held on October 3rd at several locations in and around Colombo.

The campaign will be carried out opposite the Fort Railway Station, Maradana Railway Station, Ceylon Electricity Board head office, Colombo Port, Ministry of Public Administration, Sethsiripaya, Workers colony at Rathmalana, the Government Press, Colombo National Hospital and the Department of Labor.
