2013 Sep 30

It is reported that Indian External Minister Salman Khurshid would be visiting Sri Lanka soon in order to discuss the matter regarding Indian fishermen who are in the custody of Sri Lanka.

According to The Hindu newspaper, this was revealed during a meeting of Indian fishermen with Union Minister of State for the Prime Minister's office in India, V. Narayanaswamy. The fishermen had requested the minister to intervene in the release of Indian fishermen and their boats from Sri Lankan custody.

During the discussion Minister Narayanaswamy has said that the central government would take all steps necessary to release the fishermen and also secure their boats.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalitha Jeyram forwarded a letter to the Indian minister on Saturday, demanding the prime minister to exert diplomatic pressure on Sri Lanka to secure the release of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody.
