The Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) yesterday clained that one of their activists had been threatened with death, at his residence in Kurunegala on Monday night, by a group identifying themselves as Defence Ministry officials.

IUSF Convener Sanjeewa Bandara said that Chinthaka Rajapaksha’s parents and brother had been questioned and threatened by the group at his home in Nikawewa in Kurunegala.

Rajapaksha is a former President of the Rajarata University Students’ Council and acting Convener of the IUSF.

"Our comrade’s family was threatened two days after his brother’s wedding and they also had questioned the family on why I visited them, though I went for the function," Bandara said.

He said that the gang also had questioned about Chinthaka’s activities and warned his parents to stop his activities.

The gang, after questioning, had photographed Rajapaksha’s parents and brother, using mobile phones, Bandara said.

He said that it was not the first time that Chinthaka had been threatened. He had earlier received death threats through anonymous letters and telephone calls on several occasions.

Asked whether they lodged a complaint with the police regarding the incident, Bandara said that they did not complain to the police as police had not acted on their previous complaints.

"We decided to lodge a complaint with the Human Rights Commission regarding this continuous harassment, as we have no faith in the police," the IUSF Convener said.
