The report of the three-member committee to investigate the November 2012, Welikada Prison riots in which 27 prisoners died, was handed over to the Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms, Chandrasiri Gajadeera, yesterday.

Speaking to Ceylon Today, Minister Gajadeera said, "The Chairman of the Committee handed the report and we are making an appraisal, based on its contents.

"We will thereafter make the necessary recommendations, while we will also not hesitate to take appropriate action to enforce the law against the wrongdoers." He went on to say that the report is in two parts, and contains 564 pages. "Meting out maximum justice to those who suffered on account of the riots, is my responsibility," the minister added.

The three-member committee comprised former Justice, Bandula Atapattu, former DIG, Gunasena Thenabadu and the former District Judge, Lalith Andrahennadi.

The report had been delayed several times due to various reasons, leading to the international community focusing its attention on the issue. The media also revealed that UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay, had inquired about the progress of the report.
