2013 Sep 24

The External Affairs Ministry of Sri Lanka has instructed the country's overseas missions to avoid unnecessary travel expenses and to restrict travel requirements within the allocated budget.

External Affairs Ministry Secretary Karunathilaka Amunugama said that the Ministry has issued the relevant instructions to the Sri Lankan diplomatic missions overseas and all Sri Lankan diplomats would have to abide by this directive.

He said the Ministry had noted excesses in expenditure in certain sectors by overseas missions.

According to Amunugama, the directive was issued following a routine half-year assessment of travel expenses by Sri Lankan diplomats.

The annual budgetary travel expenses for Sri Lankan diplomats for the current year are reportedly Rs. 250 million.
