Case pertaining to removal of Slave Island houses taken up

2013 Sep 24

The case filed against the removal of several houses located down Glennie Street in Slave Island was taken up in court once again today.

Attorney-at-Law Sujeewa Senasinghe said:

“We are carrying on with this case amidst many difficulties. We made submissions in court today that about 80 to 90% of this land belongs to these people. These are not government lands, these are private lands. We stated that most of these people do not want to move from this area. The court, in response, stated that work should be done to develop the area. Therefore, it was decided to provide housing facilities in a building being constructed in this seven acre plot of land in the Slave Island area itself. Until this building is being built, these individuals will receive a rent. Court also agreed to grant some people the right to request compensation equivalent to the valuation of their plot of land.
