Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission Act to be amended to empower the commission

2013 Sep 09

Commissioner of Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa said that steps had been taken to amend the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission act of 1996.

The amendment, he said, aims to empower the Human Rights Commission to avoid delays in implementing the commission's recommendations.

The draft amendments are to be submitted for cabinet approval soon.

The Commissioner of HRCSL said that although 90 percent of the recommendations of the Human Rights Commission are implemented timely the Act lacks sufficient provisions to quicken the implementations of the recommendations.

With the Amendments, the Commission will have power to get high court rulings on the individuals delaying the actions and force them to implement the recommendations of the Commission, he said.

Dr. Mahanamahewa said that the individuals not implementing the high court order can be hauled for the contempt of court.
