Pillay admits giving more time to Lankan issue

2013 Aug 29

United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner Navanethem Pillay yesterday said that she had given more time to Sri Lanka in spite of it being a small country. Comparing the UNHRC focus on Sri Lanka and Russia, Pillay said that the former was taking more time than even Russia.

The South African born commissioner was making farewell remarks following a meeting with citizens’ representatives in Trincomalee.

Pillay was speaking after SLFP Batticaloa District organiser Arun Tambimuttu expressed surprise that the Darusman panel which inquired into war crimes allegations during the final phase of the conflict in May 2009 had recommended that the identities of those who furnished information to the panel wouldn’t be revealed for 20 years. Tambimuttu expressed shock and surprise at its recommendation that would allow propagating of unsubstantiated allegations. (SF)
