Sri Lanka's Human Rights Commission to bring law reforms to protect the plaintiffs

2013 Aug 13

Human Rights Commission (HRC) of Sri Lanka has taken steps to propose law reforms aimed at protecting the plaintiffs.

Under the laws to be brought the authorities are prevented from taking action against the public officials who complain of rights violations, until the probe is over.

Recently, a school teacher of Royal College staged a protest on a roof top against her transfer to another school while human rights complaints by her were pending.

The Commissioner of the HRC, Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa said that the Commission would be empowered with the proposed reforms.

The HRC will be empowered to take legal action against the persons who do not respect the rulings of the Commission. The mandate of the commissioners of Human Rights Commission has also been proposed to be extended up to five years.
