G.L heading to New Delhi

2013 Aug 07

Foreign Minister G L Peiris will be visiting New Delhi later this month, the New Indian Express reported.

Sources said that Peiris will be heading to Delhi for a day-long visit on August 18, with the invitation letter for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo from November 15 to 17.

While sources did not say if Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will accept it, there was indication that the decision to participate will be taken later.

It will depend on a number of factors, including the report of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay who will be visiting Sri Lanka this month, the New Indian Express reported.

Further, the conduct of the northern provincial elections will also be monitored carefully by India and the international community and factored in while taking decission on the participation.

It will also be seen if the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government will make efforts to change the 13th amendment after the elections, since the parliamentary select committee that is examining the issue is not likely to give its report before that.

The domestic political situation in Tamil Nadu will of course weigh on New Delhi, with the two major regional parties opposing any likely visit by the Prime Minister to the island nation.
