Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) yesterday blamed the Colombo University administration for the delay in approving a seminar scheduled for last Friday.

FUTA President Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri told The Island that the History Department of the Colombo University’s Arts Faculty planned to hold a discussion and seminar on the 13th Amendment to the Constitution last week.

They planned to hold the seminar with the participation of Technology and Research Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake and undergraduates from all faculties, he said.

Dr. Dewasiri said that the FUTA had made a formal request to the Registrar of the University seeking prior approval two weeks back, but so far they had not received any response.

"We had to cancel the event as the university administration was delaying approval," Dr. Dewasiri said, adding that it was not the way to run a university.

The senior academic raised the issue at the Faculty Board meeting last Friday, but the Dean of the Arts Faculty also failed to provide an answer.
Undergraduates of the History Department had already sent a letter to Vice Chancellor informing him of the issue, Dr. Dewasiri said.
