UK visa applicant arrested

2013 Aug 03

A Sri Lankan visa applicant was arrested yesterday for using false documentation and a fake identity to apply for a UK visa, the British High Commission in Colombo said.

The suspect was referred by UK Visas and Immigration to the Fraud Investigations Bureau of the police. The visa applicant was applying to visit the UK. Investigations have revealed the applicant had made four previous attempts to get a visa under a different identity and has then applied using a different name and birth details, under which he had fraudulently obtained a Sri Lankan passport and other supporting documents. The latest visa application has been refused and the arrested applicant faces a 10-year travel ban to the UK. In addition, he now faces prosecution for his actions.

UK Visas and Immigration Operations Manager, Tony Williams, said “We will not tolerate abuse of the UK’s immigration rules. Where we see abuse, we will take action against those involved. I would strongly advise visa applicants not to submit false documents and not to use false identities or other forms of deception.” The UK Visas and Immigration team uncovered this deception because it conducts extensive checks on documents submitted with visa applications.
