Treasury chief on CHOGM 2013 expenditure

2013 Aug 01

Treasury Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundera yesterday explained measures taken by the government to limit expenditure incurred on the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2013) in November.

Dr. Jayasundera said that every effort would be made to minimise expenditure in accordance with a Cabinet directive. The Treasury Chief was responding to a media query at the monthly Temple Tress media interaction with editors of national print and electronic media.

According to him, the import of vehicles by different ministries too had been stopped in the run-up to CHIGM 2013 to enable the import of necessary vehicles in line with CHOGM standards.

Commenting on security measures adopted at CHOGM 2013, Dr. Jayasundera said that Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was agreeable to release the required vehicles. The Treasury chief asserted that those vehicles imported for the use of visiting dignitaries could be re-sold at a hefty profit afterwards.

Dr. Jayasundera quoted senior Japanese and Chinese officials as having said that many believed the country was still at war though the conflict ended in May 2009. The official claimed that there would be business delegations from Japan, China and South Korea in Colombo during CHOGM 2103.
