Magistrate Arvinda Perera yesterday released Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando and five others on personal bail in Rs. 50,000 each and warned them not to obstruct the new principal of Prince of Wales College from carrying out his duties.

The schools deputy Principal Subashini Kapurupassa, who was also alleged to have been involved in organizing the demonstration against the new principal with the assistance of several parents, was severely warned and discharged.

Parents launched a protest when the new principal of Prince of Wales College, J. W. Siriwardena, arrived at the school to assume duties last week following the interdiction of the former principal over collecting money and depositing it in an account of the old boys’ association while disregarding education ministry circulars.

The Magistrate ordered them to allow the new principal to assume duties as his appointment had been made by the Public Service Commission after calling for applications from suitable persons.

Police were ordered to remove the temporary structure put up by parents to block the main gate of the school.

The case will taken up again on August 05.

However, four Buddhist monks rushed to the main gate of the school and held a pirith ceremony for the protesting parents yesterday morning.
