VAS IN VAST CONSPIRACY Bid to obtain affidavits from suspects

2013 Jul 31

Former DIG Vas Gunawardena is reportedly attempting to obtain affidavits from several suspects in the Mohammed Siyam murder case while in prison, to the effect that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)secured their confessions by misleading them.

It is reported that Gunawardena is trying to collect affidavits from these suspects stating that the CID recorded statements from them under Section 127 of the Penal Code after an assurance from ASP Shani Abeysekera that they would be released.

Reliable sources said that lawyers have already collected affidavits from several suspects.

Also, it is being reported that the suspects had been influenced while in prison to take up the position that the CID had falsely promised to make the suspects state witnesses and to secure their release on the advice of the Attorney General.

It reported that at least 7-8 Police personnel are visiting former DIG Vss Gunawardena daily. It is now revealed that these Police personnel together with prison officials are making every attempt to get Gunawardena acquitted of the charges against him.

Krishantha Koralagem Paudeen Muthalif, Former DG Vss Gunawardena, SI Indika Bamunusinghe, Police Constables Gamini Srachchandra, Priyantha Sanjeeva and Kelum Rangana Dissanayake are the suspects who have been remanded over the incident.
