India for equality in Sri Lanka

2013 Jul 30

India says it wants a level field for all the communities living in Sri Lanka, Indian media report said.

Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said this while speaking at an interaction in Bangalore yesterday.

His comments came just as a group of Sri Lankans urged neighbouring India yesterday not to interfere in their country’s internal affairs by criticizing plans to withdraw rights from provincial councils set up to share power with ethnic minority Tamils.

About 100 protesters from the Federation of National Organizations, made up of nationalistic groups, staged a silent protest in front of the Indian embassy in Colombo.

Earlier Indian Union Minister of State V. Narayanasamy had said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had assured Tamil Nadu Government that there was no change in the stand of the Centre on Reconciliation and Devolution of Political Powers to Ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka.

The 13th Amendment is part of the Indo-Lanka accord of 1987 which seeks to give more powers to the provinces.

He said the Prime Minister had also made it clear that there would be no change in the Centre’s stand on Sri Lankan Tamils issue. (Colombo Gazette)
