Inter University Students' Federation convener released on bail

Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Convener Sanjeewa Bandara remanded for violating bail conditions in a previous case by leading a protest by undergraduates was yesterday released on bail by Gangodawila Magistrate Ajith M. Masinghe.

Bail was set at Rs. 50,000 personal and he was ordered to report to the Mirihana police on the last Sunday of each month.

Earlier on Sept. 25, 2012, Bandara was granted bail on the condition that he would not organise unlawful gatherings.

According to the Colombo Crimes Division, Bandara organised a protest march from Sri Jayewardenepura University to the University Grants Commission and led a demonstration opposite the UGC on July 03.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate released him on July 15 and banned him from entering universities as he was no longer an undergraduate.

However, Bandara was remanded in a separate case filed by the Mirihana police at the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court over organising a protest march from the Sri Jayewardenepura University on July 12.
