The Sri Lankan Constitution paves the way for racism, as Section 18 states that Sinhala is the official language of Sri Lanka, JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe said yesterday.

However, section 19 states that Sinhala and Tamil are the national languages of Sri Lanka, he said adding that it must be changed.

Amarasinghe was addressing the launch of the JVP’s proposals to solve the national problem, titled ‘An Approach to the Solution of the National Question’, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.

The first copies of the booklet were presented to JVP activist in Kilinochchi Vaithalingam Yogaratnam, former principal Poshia Hassen and Ayurvedic consultant Dr. Nanda Wijeratne.

"We proposed that Sinhala, Tamil and English should be the official languages of Sri Lanka, in accordance with the policy document released in 1971 by our founder, the late Rohana Wijeweera," Amarasinghe said.

He said that the current Constitution must be changed even now as it did not facilitate reconciliation.

"The architects of this Constitution were leftists and the JVP is ashamed that they made such a Constitution while being leftists," Amarasinghe said.

He said that the JVP would not play a role in the discussions on 13-A, 13-A plus or the 13th amendment and it’s stand has always been that the 13-A should be abolished.

"We will not participate in any discussion to add or dilute powers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution," Amarasinghe said.

"Amarasinghe said a JVP government would abolish the provincial council system and would not take notice of India’s pressure.

India has got involved on behalf of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka because the government is doing nothing for them, but a JVP regime would do its best for them," Amarasinghe said adding that then India would not be able to point its fingers at the government and even the Tamil people reject their interference.
