A group of parents of students attending Meepawala Amarasuriya Vidyalaya in Galle, staged a large demonstration in front of the school recently demanding the removal of the principal.

The protesters claimed the school, which was known for its maintenance of discipline, had declined in standards due to the present principal's poor administration.

The placards carried by the protestors had slogans that read – 'authorities wake up,' 'rescue the school at least now,' 'Your Excellency, please save our school' and 'no progress in school.'

Member of the Ajani Organization in the Galle District, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana and Southern Provincial Council (PC) member, Ven. Baddegama Samitha Thera, also participated in the protest.

Addressing the large gathering, Dr. Pathirana said, "What politicians and officials cannot resolve can be achieved by public protests. The present principal of the school is one who secured two or three marks at the interview. It is the Public Services Commission (PSC) that gave him this appointment. The appointment was made without the approval of the Education Ministry. I discussed this issue at length even with the Education Ministry Advisory Select Committee. The principal has tendered his letter of resignation, but the PSC is not taking any remedial action."

Southern PC member Ven. Baddegama Samitha Thera speaking after the demonstration, said, "The vacancy for the post of principal at Ananda College, Colombo, was filled, expeditiously. It was the Education Director of the Southern Province who appointed him to that post. Now the post of Southern Province Education Director is vacant. Don't feed Colombo with fresh milk and the villages with spoilt milk."
