GMOA to hold Kegalle patients to ransom on Thursday

Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday announced a token strike in Kegalle on Thursday accusing former Karawanella hospital director Dr. Indika Jagoda of assuming functions of the Regional Director Health Services Dr. Gamini Seneviratne without authority.

The GOMA Branch union would launch a taken strike in protest of the action by Dr. Jagoda on July 25 from 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., GMOA Committee Member Dr. Nalinda Herath told a medical conference held at the GMOA head office.

Dr. Herath said that the Karawanella hospital Director Dr. Jagoda was transferred to Kegalle to work under Regional Director Health Services Dr. Gamini Seneviratne a few weeks ago. But he had taken over the duties of Dr. Seneviratne to work as the regional director without the proper approval of the health secretary, because the RDHS had been appointed to a higher position. During Dr. Jagoda’s tenure of office in Karawanella he had harassed many doctors who wanted to get transfers.

He added that Dr. Jagoda had no authority to take over the RDHS duties by force and the due appointment must come from the Health Secretary.

Dr. Jagoda when contacted said that he was transferred from Karawanella hospital to the Kegalle RDHS office to work under Dr. Gamini Seneviratne. Dr. Seneviratne went on annual transfer. Before he left the RDHS office, he handed over the RDHS duties to him. Even the Health Secretary was aware of that. If he had harassed the Karawanella hospital doctors, they should ask the relevant authorities to hold an inquiry. They had not even discussed any such problem with him at all.

Dr. Jagoda said that he had undergone a specialized training in hospital administration. "I have the feeling that the GMOA has been hostile to me for a long time. I have taken over the RDHS duties with the concurrence of the Health Ministry. In terms of qualifications I have the best credentials to be the RDHS," Dr. Jagoda stressed.
