The Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) held a protest opposite the Fort Railway Station yesterday, against suppression of student activism in universities.

Approximately 700 university students took to the streets and shouted demands urging the attention of the authorities. Police stood on guard, armed with riot gear and water cannons.

"The student suppression within the national university system reached its pinnacle in the past few months. The latest was the arrest of IUSF Convener, Sanjeewa Bandara," acting Convener, Najith Indika, said.

Sanjeewa Bandara was arrested on 3 July after he led a protest march organized by the students of the Sri Jayewardenepura University and other universities. The students were protesting against the deterioration of free education and the privatization of the education system through the admission of foreign students into State universities.
