The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) has planned to stage a protest against the Registrar of the Colombo University, for allegedly violating the agreement between university teachers and Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

FUTA President Dr. Ranjith Dewasiri told The Island that the Colombo University Registrar had not allowed the teachers to hold a media conference at the Faculty Club of the university last week by directing marshals to prevent journalists from entering the campus Finally, the FUTA members conducted an outdoor media briefing near the Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha entrance of the university.

Dr. Dewasiri said a circular named unauthorised entry of media to universities and higher educational institutes, issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Nov. 22, 2010, had been withdrawn by a letter (UGC/C/PF/23/12 on Nov. 15, 2012) under then chairman Prof. Gamini Samaranayake.

"According to our agreement with the government, when we ended the 100-day-long strike last year, eight circulars were withdrawn and amended by the UGC," the FUTA chief said, noting that circular at issue was the first theˆUGC had withdrawn. Dr. Dewasiri said that Colombo University Registrar had since said he was not aware of the withdrawal of that circular.

The FUTA had already sent a letter to the Registrar expressing its displeasure first and would decide on a future course of action at its next Executive Committee meeting, the senior academic said.
