Sri Lankan peace keeping troops decorated in Haiti

Sri Lankan troops serving in United Nations peace keeping duties in Haiti have been recognized by the UN for their service.


The Sri Lankan contingent serving the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Republic of Haiti (MINUSTAH) was awarded medals of service recognition at the formal UN Medal Parade held at the Sri Lankan contingent headquarters in Leogane on July 11.


Deputy Special Representative of Secretary General of MINUSTAH Carl Alexander graced the medal parade as the Chief Guest in the company of its Force Commander Lieutenant General Edson Leal Pujol.


Sri Lanka Army's special representative, Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) and Security Force Commander-Wanni, Major General Boniface Perera represented Sri Lanka at the ceremony.


All UN representatives and the Force Commander spoke high of the contribution of the Sri Lankan contingent and thanked Sri Lanka for their excellent job "well done", the Army said.


Other foreign contingent commanders, staff members of UN agencies and several distinguished citizens from the area participated in the occasion.


The Sri Lankan contingent comprising Army, Navy and Air Force troops after successful completion of their assignment is expected to return home shortly.
