2013 Jul 18

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) says that it is working towards improving the country's human rights record and a national inquiry is being planned in this regard.

A Commissioner of the HRCSL Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa has said that the Commission is preparing to hold a National Inquiry on the practice of Human Rights in the island.

The National Inquiry aims to obtain the opinions of the general public on the human rights issues and earlier this month more than 50 staff from the HRCSL completed a Commonwealth training workshop on how to conduct national inquiries in compliance with international human rights standards.

Dr. Mahanamahewa has said that this Inquiry is also targeted to upgrade the current international human rights rating for Sri Lanka from 'B' status to 'A' status.

According to the Commissioner, when resolutions are brought against Sri Lanka in Geneva, UN authorities would raise questions regarding the National Inquiry.

Justice Priyantha Perera, Chairperson of the HRCSL has said that the Commonwealth workshop has been very comprehensive in building their knowledge and broadening their understanding of national inquiries and how they can be used as an effective tool.

The Commonwealth Secretariat has reiterated that it will continue to provide technical, financial, monitoring and oversight support to HRCSLto strengthen its capacity and take a stronger leadership role on human rights protection
