2013 Jul 18

The Chief Editor of Sri Lanka's Janarala newspaper today refused to give a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over a news report published in the newspaper.

Janarala Chief Editor Chandana Sirimalwatta said in a letter addressed to the Officer-in-Charge of the Intelligence Section of the CID stated that the he didn't see any legality in questioning the journalists of the newspaper over the sources of the news.

The CID questioning was in regard of a report published in the newspaper about alleged suicides of 13 farmers. Janarala editor said that the police could easily find necessary information from the relevant police stations.

The report was published in the newspaper on September 12, 2012.

Two officers of the CID came to the newspaper office on July 02, 2013 and asked the writers of the news story to appear in CID to record a statement.

In May this year, the Editor has been questioned by the Western Province Crime Division of Police over a separate article about the involvement of a prominent lady in a gold racket.
