Sri Lanka affirms commitment to free press ahead of CHOGM 2013

2013 Jul 15

The Task Force Secretariat for the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting notes that Sri Lanka, as a member of the Commonwealth of nations, remains fully committed to Commonwealth values including a free press.

Issuing a communiqu, Charitha Herath, the chairman of the sub-committee on media, publicity and ICT for the CHOGM Task Force Secretariat,  notes that there had been various reports expressing concern about the accreditation process to cover the 2013 CHOGM.

Charitha Hearth notes that Sri Lanka looks forward to receiving applications from local and international media professionals to cover the event in November.

He notes that the accreditation process adopted by Sri Lanka is based entirely on the commonwealth secretariat guidelines which have been followed at previous CHOGM's.

The accreditation for international media will be reviewed and processed by the 2013 CHOGM Task Force Secretariat in Colombo together with the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.

The communique further notes that CHOGM will provide an excellent opportunity for international journalists to get a first hand look at the developments in post-war Sri Lanka.
