Female representation in Parliament should be increased - Speaker

2013 Jul 12

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa says that female representation in Parliament should be increased to at least 35 percent.

He expressed this view at a function held in Colombo on Wednesday.

The function was held under the auspices of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne with the participation of women representing the Parliament.

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa had this to share

'You have asked for a female representation of 33 percent in Parliament. But I think that it should be 35 percent. I think this is possible. The issue is whether you can come to Parliament through the existing election system. I know that if a woman wins an electorate she will not let any man go above her. I know this because there are women who have been selected from our district.

Prime Minister D. M.Jayarathne expressed these views

'Is it alright if I say something on women? Hope you wont get angry. There is a saying. This is not something which I am saying, this saying was there 2600 years ago. Now it is not there. It refers to female intelligence surpassing the teachers intelligence nowadays.'
