The Ministry of Health has received a number of complaints against a male teacher attached to the Nurses’ Training School in Hambantota, including charges of sexually abusing trainees after forcing them to consume alcohol.

It was revealed, if the students refused to obey him, he threatened to take action against them with regard to academic activities.

When inquired about this, the principal of the training school said she too had received information to this effect. She noted one of the students of the Nurses’ Training School, who was a victim of the abuse, is undergoing psychiatric treatment.

“I made a complaint to the Ministry of Health, after which the student and his father brought this incident of abuse to my notice,” the principal explained.

She continued, “Following my complaint, a team of officials came to the Nurses’ Training School and conducted an inquiry. But I heard that some students had not spoken against the male teacher, who is at the centre of allegations.”

The principal noted the suspect male teacher is trying to hide the investigation report as he is a member of a powerful trade union.

Another trade union asserted that an inquiry should be held on the particular teacher and he should receive punishment if he is found guilty.

Upon inquiry, an official attached to the Ministry of Health said the ministry has received such a complaint and is conducting investigations.
