A Cabinet subcommittee comprising Mass Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambulwella, Economic Development Minster Basil Rajapaksa, Petroleum Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa and Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma will look into all aspects of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), scheduled to take place here in November.

Mass Media and Information Ministry Secretary Dr. Charitha Herath yesterday requested all media organisations to help boost the country’s image through that biggest international event taking place here since the Non-Aligned Summit in 1976.

Herath said that 15 subcommittees were working on various aspects of the event. Three conferences–– Youth, Business and People’s––would take place on the side lines of the main summit, he added.

A first day cover and a stamp will be released to mark the CHOGM. Meanwhile, media registration for Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) commenced at 11.59 p.m. on Wednesday and nearly 1,200 journalists were expected to cover it.

A senior official of the Information and Mass Media Ministry’s Planning Division told The Island yesterday that they expected 1,000 journalists, however, arrangements had been made for nearly 1,200 journalists including 800 foreign journalists and 400 local journalists.

The official also said that media access to all CHOGM 2013 events and venues would be controlled through media accreditation passes, which would be issued to CHOGM-accredited media persons on arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) or at the Media Centre at the BMICH.

Media accreditation is open to journalists, editors, photographers, sound and camera crews, technical staff attached to media organisations and freelance media professionals.

Media accreditation will allow access to the main Media Centre within the main conference centre, BMICH in Colombo and all sub-media centres at all other CHOGM venues.

Registration for media accreditation will be open till October 25, 2013. Media professionals travelling as part of a country delegation must apply for accreditation either as a ‘Delegate’ or ‘Media’, not both.
