Boycott CHOGM “ Canadian opposition

2013 Jul 11

The Canadian opposition requested from the Canadian government to boycott the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka if Sri Lanka fails to conduct an independent investigation into the war crime allegations.

Speaking to BBC Sandeshaya New Democratic Party parliamentarian
Rathika Sitsabaiesan stated that Canada should take the lead in compelling the Sri Lanka to conduct an independent investigation into the war crime allegations as recommended by the United Nations.

“Actually, it is difficult to trust our conservative government, because they make different comments time to time”, she said.

She emphasized that since the country that hosts the CHOGM will gain the leadership of Commonwealth for the next two years only the Prime Minister Stephen Harper boycotting the conference will not be sufficient.

“First they said that they are not attending. Then they said that Prime Minister is not attending. Therefore we do not know what the government’s standpoint is”.

Speaking to BBC Sandeshaya Rathika Sitsabaiesan further stated that Canada should request from other countries to boycott the conference.
