The Federation of University Teachers Associations has stated that there is an attempt to suppress the university students.

Chairman of FUTA Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri said that the student suppression is a threat to the entire university system.

"This is a serious issue," he said. "The attempts being made to influence the students actions and suppress them is a threat to the entire university system. They need to understand that engaging in protests and rallies is a part of Sri Lankan university culture.'

When News 1st made inquiries, chairman of the University Grants Commission Professor Shanika Hiriburegama reiterated that these allegations are baseless. She added that students have the right to express their views but they do not have the right to disrupt the peaceful environment within universities.

The Chairman of the UGC went on to note that it is the duty of the university administration to ensure the rights of students to obtain the benefits of free education in a peaceful manner.
